|Chris Paul didn’t have a great game Tuesday after missing five of the previous six games to rest while dealing with minor injuries. The nine-time All-Star was back to his old self Thursday night.
Paul hit an off-balance layup with 0.8 seconds left to lift the Houston Rockets to a 96-94 win over the Portland Trail Blazers Jake Muzzin Jersey , who were without start Damian Lillard.
Paul scored 27 points to help Houston get its second straight victory since a loss to San Antonio. The Rockets swept their four-game season series with Portland.
The performance came after he finished with just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting in Houston’s last game.
”There was no doubt that he was going to get back in his game,” coach Mike D’Antoni said. ”This is really good for him.”
Paul said a strength of this team is that they have so many different options when they need a big play, like they did Thursday night.
”James (Harden) can take it, I can take it, we’ve got other guys … so you’ve got to make a choice,” he said.
The Rockets led by 24 in the second quarter and still had a big lead with about five minutes left before the Trail Blazers went on a 19-2 run to tie it at 94 with 6.1 seconds left. James Harden, who finished with 24 points, missed two free throws with 13.3 seconds left before Pat Connaughton tied it with a short basket.
Paul made the winner before crashing to the court. It gave Houston its first points since Harden made a basket with just less than four minutes left. Portland had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but C.J. McCollum’s 3-point attempt was off.
”I was pleased with the way we finished the game … it was too bad we couldn’t go to overtime or win it,” Portland coach Terry Stotts said.
Lillard sat out after spraining his left ankle Tuesday against Dallas. Stotts didn’t set a return date but did say he expects to see him in a game before the playoffs begin.
McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 16 points, and Jusuf Nurkic had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Portland scored the first seven points of the second half and cut a 22-point halftime deficit to 13 at the beginning of the fourth. The Trail Blazers were down by 18 late in the third quarter before capping it with a five straight points to cut it to 84-71 entering the fourth.
A basket by Shabazz Napier got the Trail Blazers within 85-75 with about 10 minutes left before both teams began struggling offensively. The teams combined to miss 10 shots over the next three minutes before Clint Capela ended Houston’s drought with a dunk. That started a 7-0 run for the Rockets that made it 92-75.
Harden was shaken up when Wade Baldwin pushed him in the torso as he attempted a layup with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter. He fell to his knees and stayed on the court for a minute before talking to a trainer and remaining in the game.
The Rockets led 66-44 at halftime behind 20 points from Paul and 15 points from Harden.
Trail Blazers: Portland had 18 turnovers. … They made 7 of 22 3-pointers. … Baldwin had 14 points off the bench.
Rockets: Ryan Anderson sat out with a sprained left ankle. … Eric Gordon missed the game because of a foot injury. … Capela had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
FAMOUS FRONT ROW
Several celebrities sat on the front row near Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta. Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander and wife/model Kate Upton were fashionably late, strolling in with Astros owner Jim Crane and wife Whitney during the second quarter. Verlander was wearing the World Series championship ring he received Tuesday night and proudly displayed it when he was introduced to the crowd in the third quarter. Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson arrived early, taking in pregame warmups with rapper Travis Scott. The two received a loud ovation when the arena played one of Scott’s hits and showed them on the Jumbotron in the first half.
WHAT A GIFT
During a timeout in the fourth quarter Oliver Ekman-Larsson Jersey , Crane presented Fertitta with a World Series ring. The Astros owner said: ”I wanted to give you a little bit of our luck and good fortune and give you a championship ring.” After presenting it to him, he added that he would be expecting Fertitta to return the favor if the Rockets win it all this season.
Crane was very generous with the rings following Houston’s first World Series win last season and is handing out more than 1,300 to players, coaches, staff and even seasonal employees this week.

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan remembers all too well the last time New Orleans entered a season with a lot of hype.
The Saints seemed like a good bet to make the playoffs for a fifth time in six seasons back in 2014. Instead, they stumbled to a 7-9 record in what became the first of three straight frustrating, sub-.500 campaigns before they won the NFC South last season.
"Everyone's going to talk about potential. Everyone's going to talk about, 'on paper,' how good we look," said Jordan, an All-Pro in 2017 with a career-high 13 sacks. "We've been here before. We've seen this a couple years ago, when we looked great on paper. Paper doesn't play Sunday."
The schedule seemingly sets the Saints up to win a season opener for the first time since 2013 this Sunday, when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New Orleans has nearly all key players back from a squad that came within a "Minnesota Miracle" of advancing to the NFC title game. Now the Saints are eager to move on from the 61-yard Vikings touchdown they gave up on their last play of last season.
The Bucs Tomas Tatar Jersey , by contrast, are coming off a five-win campaign that extended their decade-long playoff drought and must play without starting quarterback Jameis Winston, who is serving a three-game suspension .
Oddsmakers have made the Saints one of the most heavily favored NFL teams 鈥?by more than a touchdown 鈥?in Week 1.
"We recognize what kind of a football team New Orleans has," Tampa Bay coach Dirk Koetter said. "We're going to go out there and do everything we can to give it to them on Sunday."
And why not? The last time these teams met, in their 2017 regular season finale, the Bucs won in an upset.
Here are some key subplots that will play out when the Bucs and Saints renew their divisional rivalry:
PREMIER MATCHUP: Bucs receiver Mike Evans is one of three players in NFL history 鈥?along with A.J. Green and Hall of Famer Randy Moss 鈥?to have 1,000 yards-plus receiving in each of the first four seasons of a career. Evans figures to be covered by Saints cornerback Marshawn Lattimore, last season's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
"I look forward to the matchup," said Evans, who was suspended one game last season for a blindside hit on Lattimore.
Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, starting for Winston, doesn't sound inclined to look away from Evans just because of who is covering him.
"When you have a guy like Mike Evans, he's going to get his balls http://www.officialstarsproonline.com/authentic-adidas-brett-ritchie-jersey ," Fitzpatrick said. "There is nobody that I am really going to shy away from, no disrespect to anybody, just because the talent level Mike has."
SUSPENDED STARTERS: Each team is coping with the suspension of a prominent offensive player.
The Saints are without Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram, their leading rusher last season with 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was suspended four games for use of a banned substance. That raises the possibility that Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara will play more snaps, but Kamara was careful not give away anything on that front.
"The way our team is trending, we're an unselfish group," Kamara said. "If my touches are low, then it is what it is, if that's what we have to do to win."
Winston begins a three-game suspension stemming from an eight-month NFL investigation that concluded he touched a female Uber driver inappropriately in 2016.
"At this point, it's like any other injury that a guy's out for three weeks," Koetter said.
ROSTER TURNOVER: One of Tampa Bay's top priorities was revamping a pass rush that produced a league-low 22 sacks a year ago. In addition to acquiring former New York Giants star Jason Pierre-Paul in a trade , two other new starters on the defensive line 鈥?Vinny Curry and Beau Allen 鈥?signed as free agents after helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl. Defensive coordinator Mike Smith said Pierre-Paul had a good training camp and has been everything the Bucs expected in terms of his drive to learn the scheme and make it tough for coaches to sub him out.
"The guy doesn't want to come off the field Cam Talbot Jersey ," Smith said. "He's a guy that's played, when's he's been healthy, 90-plus percent of the snaps on defense. That is unheard of a lot of times in the NFL."
The Saints spent the bulk of their efforts in free agency trying to improve a defense that ranked 17th, bringing in linebacker Demario Davis, safety Kurt Coleman and cornerback Patrick Robinson. Meanwhile, receiver Cameron Meredith is expected to make his debut for an offense that ranked second a season ago, while tight end Ben Watson returns after a couple of seasons with Baltimore.
GOOD RATINGS: Saints quarterback Drew Brees had a 121.1 passer rating against the Bucs last season, his best rating against any team in 2017. But Brees quickly dispenses with the notion that he has Tampa Bay's number.
"We know how competitive this team is regardless of what their record said last year," Brees said. "They've got a lot of really good players on defense. They went out and made some pretty significant moves through free agency and in the draft.
"It's going to be a tough, tough test."
